In Pärt/s, Jacek Przybyłowicz—continuing to add a semblance of plot to choreographic abstractions—takes the audience to the bottom of the sea, suggested by a figure wearing a deep-sea diver’s helmet, moving gracefully. Set to music by Arvo Pärt (Für Alina, Variations zur Gesundung von Arinuschka, and Cantus in memoriam Benjamin Britten), we witness a sequence of poetic images set against a shimmering flood of silver ribbons and an incredibly subtle play of light (Maciej Igielski in all three movements). As is typical with Przybyłowicz, virtuoso duets or trios emerge from the dancers’ processions and runs—some on pointe, others barefoot, representing both classical and contemporary styles. The dancers captivate with their synchronized group work, undulating on the ground like sea sand under the pressure of waves, floating on pointe, and captivating with high poses and lifts. Perhaps the two frequently used solutions were not entirely appropriate here – gripping the pointe of the leg bent in rotation and joining the fingers of both hands in front of you at the level of the solar plexus.
