La Mer by Claude Debussy is directly associated with the theme of the evening, and to some extent the choreography by Douglas Lee may also have seemed the most obvious. Five dancers and four male dancers in sapphire leotards are in constant motion, and although their evolutions may not be entirely imitative, the motif of waving arms appears in them from time to time. Lee also used the technique of women’s toe dancing, so again we have legs raised wide and high, further extended by ballet shoes, pirouettes and sequences of virtuoso jumps. La Mer brings many aesthetic experiences, but it also seems to be the least emotional because it is mathematically studied. There is some contradiction between the technicality and the poetic theme and Debussy’s music. But maybe anxiety is supposed to be its advantage and one of the ways of influencing it?
