Zofia Rudnicka choreographed Giselle for Łódź based on the canonical routines of Coralli and Perrot, adding her own twists, for example, a male group dance in Act I instead of a country dance performed in pairs. The idea was to give the male members of the ensemble something more challenging to dance in this production, because, as we know, almost all the difficulty in Giselle rests on the female ensemble – the soloists, the coryphées, and the corps de ballet – while the male performers are effectively limited to only three solo parts.
